What this symptom means clinically
Wheezing is a high-frequency, high-pitched breathing sound produced by airway narrowing or turbulent airflow, usually heard during inhalation or exhalation. Its pathophysiology includes restriction of the airway lumen, localized airflow changes caused by mucosal swelling or secretions, and vibration of the airway wall that produces sound. The phase and pitch of the sound can suggest the affected airway location and airflow direction.
🐱 In cats
Cats have narrower airways, so wheezing may sometimes be less obvious and is often related to localized bronchial or upper airway narrowing or secretions.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs have varied nasopharyngeal and tracheal anatomy. Brachycephalic breeds or dogs with airway abnormalities may have more obvious wheezing, and sounds may arise from either the upper or lower airway.
