Tooth Loss Symptom Guide for Pets | Observation Points and When to Seek Care
Understand possible causes of Tooth Loss and home observation points
If a tooth is lost, observe oral status and possible causes, and contact a veterinarian to arrange examination if needed.
What this symptom means clinically
Tooth loss usually reflects damage to oral supporting tissues, including periodontal recession, alveolar bone resorption, or root destruction. Chronic inflammation, root disease, or trauma can loosen teeth and lead to loss.
🐱 In cats
Cats commonly develop tooth resorptive lesions, which can destroy crown and root and make tooth loss seem sudden.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs more commonly lose teeth from periodontal disease with periodontal ligament and alveolar bone loss; trauma is also common.
Clinical signs you can observe
