Swelling Symptom Guide for Pets | Observation Points and When to Seek Care
Understand possible causes of Swelling and home observation points
When localized or generalized swelling appears, record site, size, and progression. If it expands rapidly or affects activity, seek veterinary evaluation promptly.
What this symptom means clinically
Swelling results from abnormal accumulation of fluid or blood components in tissue spaces. Mechanisms include increased capillary permeability, impaired lymphatic drainage, or altered plasma oncotic pressure. Fluid accumulation increases tissue volume and changes tension and feel.
🐱 In cats
Cats have thin skin and small subcutaneous spaces, so localized swelling may be obvious and form quickly, often after trauma or hematoma.
🐶 In dogs
In dogs, local trauma or infection commonly causes swelling; large dogs may show more widespread edema with systemic illness.
