What this symptom means clinically
Rapid Breathing is increased respiratory rate or ventilation, a compensatory response to maintain oxygenation or remove carbon dioxide. Mechanisms include impaired lung ventilation, altered cardiac output, metabolic acidosis, increased metabolic demand from fever, pain, anxiety, or upper airway obstruction. It may appear as shallow rapid breathing, deep rapid breathing, or labored breathing, reflecting different causes and respiratory burden.

Cats often hide signs; early changes may be shallow, fast breathing or increased resting rate, and acute worsening can be sudden. Open-mouth breathing in cats is usually abnormal and important.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs often show panting or open-mouth breathing. Breed differences such as brachycephaly, exercise, and heat stress affect patterns; heart or lung disease may keep breathing rate high even at rest.
