What this symptom means clinically
Nausea is a subjective sensation generated by central and peripheral nervous system responses to gastrointestinal stimulation, often involving gastrointestinal mucosal receptors, the vagus nerve, and the brainstem chemoreceptor trigger zone. Physiologic or pathologic factors such as metabolic abnormalities, vestibular imbalance, or bloodborne toxins can trigger nausea through chemical or neural pathways. Clinically, it appears as repeated behaviors suggesting an urge to vomit or reduced willingness to eat.

Cats do not clearly express nausea and often show it through behavior changes such as eating less or frequent lip licking, so subtle behaviors are important.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs more visibly show repeated swallowing, drooling, or obvious attempts to vomit, often with clearer links to feeding habits or environmental exposure.
