Pet Hypothermia Symptom Guide | Observation Points and When to Seek Care
Understand possible causes of Hypothermia and key points for home observation
This is a high-urgency condition. Low body temperature affects cardiopulmonary function, metabolism, and organ perfusion and may rapidly worsen vital function, requiring immediate attention and assessment for veterinary care.
Hypothermia in Pets Requires Immediate Attention
A significant drop in body temperature lowers metabolic rate, affects cardiovascular and respiratory function, and alters clotting and immune responses. The animal's overall condition may deteriorate quickly. Persistent or rapidly worsening hypothermia should be treated as urgent.
Recommended Action
Contact a veterinarian immediately or go to an emergency clinic for evaluation of the cause and treatment.
What this symptom means clinically
Hypothermia means core body temperature has fallen, reducing cellular metabolic rate, enzyme activity, and energy production, which then affects cardiac output and peripheral blood flow distribution. Causes may include environmental exposure, inadequate circulation, septic shock, or endocrine and metabolic imbalance. Clinically, it can produce broad changes in metabolism and organ function.
🐱 In cats
Cats are sensitive to cold and falling body temperature because of small body size, differences in subcutaneous fat, and activity level. Kittens and senior cats are especially vulnerable.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs vary greatly by size, coat thickness, and breed. Short-haired or small dogs are more prone to hypothermia from environment or inadequate energy, and young and older dogs are also commonly susceptible.

Systemic inflammatory response to infection activates the hypothalamic thermostat. The febrile response manifests as hypothermia.
Acetaminophen (APAP) Toxicosis
Toxic compounds disrupt normal cellular function through direct tissue damage. This pathological process manifests as hypothermia.
Acute Abdomen
The underlying pathological process disrupts normal organ function. This dysfunction manifests clinically as hypothermia.
Acute Kidney Injury
Physical injury causes tissue damage, inflammation, and disrupted function. The traumatic injury manifests as hypothermia.
Antidepressant Toxicosis-Tricyclic
Toxic compounds disrupt normal cellular function through direct tissue damage. This pathological process manifests as hypothermia.
