High Fever May Threaten Organ Function and Requires Immediate Attention
Persistently or markedly elevated body temperature increases metabolic demand, promotes dehydration, and burdens organs, and the condition may deteriorate quickly. A significant short-term rise in temperature should be treated as an emergency.

If rectal temperature remains >=40°C, temperature drops abnormally, or marked mentation changes are present, go to an emergency veterinarian immediately.
What this symptom means clinically
High fever occurs when the thermoregulatory center in the hypothalamus raises the set point, usually triggered by endogenous or exogenous pyrogens such as inflammatory mediators and cytokines. Rising temperature reflects increased immune response and metabolic rate and is regulated through vasoconstriction, shivering, and later heat-dissipation mechanisms.
