Pet Conjunctivitis Symptom Guide | What to Watch For and When to Seek Care
Understand possible causes of Conjunctivitis and key home observations
Conjunctivitis is a moderate-urgency eye problem. Monitor changes over 24 to 48 hours; if signs worsen or do not improve, veterinary evaluation is recommended.
What this symptom means clinically
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane covering the eye surface and inner eyelids. It may be caused by infectious agents, allergy, physical or chemical irritation, or tear film dysfunction. Inflammation causes blood vessel dilation and swelling, with redness, increased discharge, blinking, or rubbing.
🐱 In cats
In cats, conjunctivitis is commonly related to viral or bacterial eye infections and environmental irritation, often in association with upper respiratory pathogens.
🐶 In dogs
In dogs, conjunctivitis is more often associated with allergy, foreign irritants, or tear film abnormalities, and discharge patterns may vary.
