What this symptom means clinically
Circling usually reflects asymmetry in neurologic input or dysfunction of orientation and balance systems, causing the animal to turn persistently to one side. It may arise from abnormalities of the vestibular system, brainstem, or forebrain, affecting spatial orientation and proprioception and leading to repetitive turning or difficulty changing direction.
🐱 In cats
In cats, circling may be subtle. Vestibular or brain localization problems can appear as directional movement or disorientation.
🐶 In dogs
In dogs, circling is often caused by unilateral brain or vestibular dysfunction, and the animal may tend to turn continuously toward the affected side.
