Pet Polyphagia Symptom Guide | What to Watch For and When to Seek Veterinary Care
Understand possible causes of polyphagia and key at-home observations
With extreme hunger, closely monitor daily food intake and body-weight changes. If it persists or worsens without an obvious reason, consider arranging clinical evaluation.
What this symptom means clinically
Polyphagia reflects imbalance in appetite or satiety regulation and may relate to increased energy metabolism, abnormal intestinal absorption, or changes in hormonal and neurotransmitter pathways. Clinically it appears as markedly increased eating frequency and food intake, often suggesting gastrointestinal or endocrine function changes that need assessment.
🐱 In cats
Polyphagia in cats may be subtle, appearing as more frequent eating or long-term increased intake; habit changes should be noted.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs more often show active food seeking, stealing food, or rapid eating. Changes in energy needs or metabolic regulation can both cause polyphagia.
