Pet Vulvar Swelling Symptom Guide | What to Watch For and When to Seek Veterinary Care
Understand possible causes of Vulvar Swelling and key points for at-home observation
When vulvar swelling is found, closely observe its course, record changes and urination, and consult a veterinarian promptly for further evaluation if swelling persists or worsens rapidly.
What this symptom means clinically
Vulvar swelling reflects changes in volume or pressure of the vulvar soft tissues, commonly caused by tissue edema, vascular congestion, or local proliferation. Its pathophysiology may involve local inflammation, impaired lymphatic or venous drainage, and hormonally driven tissue responses. Clinically, it can indicate changes in reproductive, blood flow, or lymphatic function.
🐱 In cats
Cats have smaller vulvar structures, so swelling is often localized and harder to notice. Trauma or local infection more commonly causes localized swelling in cats.
🐶 In dogs
In female dogs, reproductive cycle-related hormonal changes or reproductive tract problems more readily cause vulvar swelling. Body size and subcutaneous tissue differences also affect how visible swelling is.
