What this symptom means clinically

A productive cough is triggered by large amounts of airway secretion or mucus, and the cough reflex helps move phlegm or foreign material upward. Clinically, thick or clear discharge and a wet mucus-like cough sound may be seen, reflecting increased upper or lower airway secretions or inflammation.

🐱 In cats

Cats often swallow phlegm or show it as a vomiting-like reflex, so an outwardly productive cough may be less obvious or appear as retching.

🐶 In dogs

Dogs more commonly have obvious mucus sounds or produce phlegm, and owners can usually notice the cough sound and observe secretion features.

Clinical signs you can observe

Check whether your pet shows any of the signs below. If several apply, seek veterinary care promptly.

Record cough episode frequency, duration, and timing
Record phlegm color, amount, thickness, and any blood streaks
Take video or audio of the cough for comparison and clinician review
Observe and record whether phlegm is produced or retching occurs
Measure and record resting respiratory rate in breaths per minute
Record activity state during episodes and whether eating or activity is affected
