Pet Poisoning Symptom Guide | What to Watch For and When to Seek Veterinary Care
Understand possible causes of poisoning and key at-home observations
Poisoning can affect multiple organ systems within a short time, including the nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, liver, or kidney systems. Treat the exposure source and patient changes as urgent and seek assessment quickly.
Poisoning can become life-threatening quickly
Some toxins can cause organ dysfunction, neurologic abnormalities, or seizures within a short time and may worsen rapidly without timely assessment. Exposure history and course of signs are important for treatment.
Recommended Action
If poisoning is suspected, contact a veterinarian immediately or go to an animal emergency hospital, and bring the suspected toxin package or photos for assessment.
What this symptom means clinically
Poisoning occurs when foreign chemicals or natural toxins enter the body through the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, or skin and disrupt physiologic function. Toxins may inhibit enzyme activity, damage cell membranes, induce oxidative stress, or interfere with nerve transmission, causing organ dysfunction. Different toxins preferentially affect the liver, kidneys, nervous system, or cardiovascular system, so signs vary with mechanism and dose.
🐱 In cats
Cats have different hepatic metabolic enzyme systems than dogs and may tolerate some drugs or chemicals poorly; even small exposures can cause significant toxicity.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs are prone to scavenging and often become poisoned after ingesting household items or foods. After gastrointestinal absorption, toxins may distribute systemically and affect multiple organs quickly.
