Pet Shock Symptom Guide | What to Watch For and When to Seek Care
Understand possible causes of Shock and what to observe at home
Emergency: Shock is an immediately life-threatening state of circulatory failure that rapidly causes inadequate organ perfusion. Seek veterinary care immediately and notify an emergency hospital.
⚠️ Seek veterinary care immediately - Shock (circulatory failure)
Shock means the body does not have enough blood volume or heart function to maintain tissue perfusion, rapidly causing inadequate oxygen delivery and metabolic imbalance. This is a life-threatening emergency.
Recommended Action
Go immediately to a veterinary hospital with emergency capability, and call ahead to describe the situation.
What this symptom means clinically
Shock occurs when the circulatory system cannot maintain enough blood flow to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues. Mechanisms include low blood volume, decreased cardiac output, distributive vasodilation, or obstructive causes, leading to poor perfusion and metabolic imbalance. Clinically, it appears as signs of circulatory failure.
🐱 In cats
Cats in Shock can move quickly from compensation to collapse and may show low temperature or sudden weakness; mucous membrane changes may be less obvious than in dogs.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs with Shock often show heart-rate changes, poor peripheral perfusion, and mentation changes, and responses to blood loss or dehydration are often more apparent.
Clinical signs you can observe
Check whether your pet shows any of the signs below. If several apply, seek veterinary care promptly.
