Pet Sepsis Symptom Guide | What to Watch For and When to Seek Care
Understand possible causes of Sepsis and what to observe at home
Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response caused by generalized infection and may rapidly affect organ function. It requires immediate attention and assessment of whether veterinary care is needed.
Sepsis may worsen rapidly; take it seriously immediately
Sepsis involves pathogens or their toxic products in the bloodstream triggering systemic inflammation. It may alter vascular and microcirculatory function, causing poor organ perfusion and physiologic instability. Because deterioration can occur quickly, immediate assessment is needed.
Recommended Action
If you suspect Sepsis or see short-term deterioration, go immediately to a veterinary hospital with emergency capability.
What this symptom means clinically
Sepsis occurs when an infectious source and its products enter the bloodstream and trigger a systemic inflammatory response. This inflammation causes vasodilation, altered permeability, and microcirculatory injury, affecting organ perfusion and metabolism and changing vital signs and consciousness.
🐱 In cats
Cats may respond to infection less obviously and may show low body temperature and reduced activity, with clinically subtle deterioration.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs more commonly show obvious systemic inflammatory responses, with temperature and circulation changes easier to notice and potentially rapid progression.

The underlying pathological process disrupts normal organ function. This dysfunction manifests clinically as sepsis.
Abscessation
Systemic inflammatory response to infection activates the hypothalamic thermostat. The febrile response manifests as sepsis.
Lactic Acidosis (Hyperlactatemia)
The underlying pathological process disrupts normal organ function. This dysfunction manifests clinically as sepsis.
