Pulmonary Edema affects respiratory function. Closely watch breathing rate, breathing effort, and mentation; if changes persist, worsen, or are clearly abnormal, seek prompt assessment.
What this symptom means clinically
Pulmonary Edema is abnormal fluid accumulation in the alveoli or lung interstitium, reducing the surface area for gas exchange and changing lung compliance. Fluid may leak from blood vessels or accumulate because lymphatic drainage is impaired, lowering oxygenation efficiency and changing breathing patterns.
🐱 In cats
In cats, Pulmonary Edema is often related to heart disease or acute changes in pulmonary vascular pressure, and quiet resting respiratory changes may be especially noticeable.
🐶 In dogs
In dogs, Pulmonary Edema may occur with heart failure, inhalation injury, or changes in lung capillary permeability; breathing effort and post-exercise changes are often more apparent.
