What this symptom means clinically
Nystagmus is involuntary, rhythmic back-and-forth movement of the eyes, reflecting imbalance in eye positioning and stabilization mechanisms. Its pathologic basis often involves abnormal signaling in the vestibular system, brainstem, or cerebellum, or impaired control of extraocular muscles and visual reflex pathways. Direction, frequency, and amplitude can suggest which functional pathways are affected.

In cats, nystagmus may be subtle, requiring close observation or video playback to determine direction and persistence.
🐶 In dogs
In dogs, horizontal, vertical, or rotary patterns can occur, and the characteristics may change with head position.
