Pet Muscle Atrophy Symptom Guide | Observation Tips and When to See a Veterinarian
Understand possible causes of Muscle Atrophy and what to observe at home
This can be observed and tracked. Record changes and reassess regularly.
What this symptom means clinically
Muscle atrophy is a reduction in muscle mass and muscle fiber size, usually reflecting an imbalance between muscle synthesis and breakdown. Mechanisms include disuse atrophy from long-term inactivity, denervation atrophy from reduced motor or peripheral nerve input, and increased muscle breakdown from metabolic or endocrine abnormalities. Atrophy reduces muscle volume and can impair strength and movement.
🐱 In cats
Muscle atrophy in cats is often hard for owners to notice because changes are subtle; comparison photos or palpation can help identify where muscle mass is decreasing.
🐶 In dogs
In dogs, muscle atrophy often appears asymmetrically or is more obvious in a limb with limited use, and effects on mobility and endurance are easier to observe.
