What this symptom means clinically
Methemoglobinemia occurs when the iron in hemoglobin is oxidized from the ferrous state, Fe2+, to the ferric state, Fe3+, causing hemoglobin to lose its effective ability to bind and release oxygen. This molecular change reduces the blood’s effective oxygen-carrying capacity and may alter blood or mucous membrane color. Hematologic testing is the main way to confirm the degree of hemoglobin oxidation and reflects a physiologic impairment in systemic oxygen delivery.

Feline hemoglobin is more sensitive to certain oxidative agents, so cats may more easily develop hemoglobin oxidation after drug or toxin exposure.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs may also develop methemoglobinemia after exposure to strong oxidizing substances or with certain metabolic abnormalities, with presentation and speed of progression varying by individual.
