Pet Lymph Node Swelling Symptom Guide | Observation Tips and When to See a Veterinarian
Understand possible causes of Lymph Node Swelling and what to observe at home
Swollen lymph nodes indicate an immune system or local tissue response. Closely observe and record size, texture, and change over time to help determine whether further testing is needed.
What this symptom means clinically
Lymph node swelling is a response of lymph nodes to antigen stimulation, infection, tumor cell infiltration, or other pathologic processes. Lymphocyte proliferation, macrophage activation, or connective tissue change increases size. Differences in texture, mobility, and growth rate reflect mechanisms such as acute inflammation, chronic fibrosis, or cellular infiltration.
🐱 In cats
In cats, lymph node swelling is often associated with local oral or skin infection, chronic inflammation, or lymphoid cell proliferation; cervical lymph nodes may be easier to feel.
🐶 In dogs
In dogs, lymph node swelling is common with lymphatic reaction from skin wounds or local infection, and may also occur at multiple sites with systemic immune responses or lymphoid disease.
