What this symptom means clinically
Photophobia is an excessive response of the eye or visual pathways to light. Common mechanisms include corneal or conjunctival irritation, inflammation of the anterior chamber or iris causing light sensitivity, and retinal or visual pathway dysfunction altering light perception. These changes can cause pain or discomfort, leading to squinting, eyelid closure, or light avoidance.
🐱 In cats
Cats often show photophobia by squinting, avoiding light, or resting in dark places. Early changes may be subtle and require careful observation.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs often show photophobia by frequent squinting, closing the eye, or turning away from light sources; reactions may be more obvious in bright environments.
