What this symptom means clinically
Kyphosis refers to an abnormal increase in the dorsal curvature of the spine. It is often caused by vertebral malformation, intervertebral disc degeneration, or vertebral fracture or collapse, and may also be associated with back muscle atrophy or abnormal neurologic function. This posture change reflects altered mechanical loading on the skeletal structure or spinal cord and nerves, and may affect both spinal stability and body posture. Clinically, visual posture, palpation, and changes in motor function help localize the lesion and suggest possible mechanisms.
🐱 In cats
In cats, a hunched back is often associated with post-traumatic vertebral displacement, disuse of the muscles, or localized infection or tumors. Muscle atrophy can also make the topline more prominent.
🐶 In dogs
In dogs, congenital vertebral malformations such as hemivertebrae or intervertebral disc disease commonly alter spinal curvature, with presentation varying by breed and age.
