Pet Jaundice Symptom Guide | Observation Points and When to Seek Care
Understand possible causes of Jaundice and key points for home observation
Jaundice may reflect abnormal liver, blood, or biliary function. If it spreads or worsens over a short time, take it seriously and act immediately.
Warning: Jaundice May Indicate Major Organ Dysfunction
Rapidly appearing or continuously spreading jaundice may indicate serious bilirubin metabolism or biliary obstruction problems, potentially causing systemic metabolic changes or complications and requiring priority care.
Recommended Action
If jaundice worsens rapidly within 24-48 hours, spreads, or occurs with obvious urine or stool color changes, go to a veterinary emergency service immediately.
What this symptom means clinically
Jaundice is yellow pigment deposition in tissues and mucous membranes, mainly caused by bilirubin accumulation in the body. Mechanisms include excessive prehepatic production from hemolysis, impaired hepatocellular uptake or metabolism, and biliary obstruction that blocks bilirubin excretion, causing discoloration of the skin, whites of the eyes, and mucous membranes.
🐱 In cats
In cats, jaundice is often related to liver disease or biliary problems. It may be more obvious in cats and can progress quickly.
🐶 In dogs
In dogs, jaundice may come from hemolytic disease, hepatocellular disease, or biliary obstruction, with more varied clinical signs and causes.
