What this symptom means clinically

Hypothermia means core body temperature has fallen, reducing cellular metabolic rate, enzyme activity, and energy production, which then affects cardiac output and peripheral blood flow distribution. Causes may include environmental exposure, inadequate circulation, septic shock, or endocrine and metabolic imbalance. Clinically, it can produce broad changes in metabolism and organ function.

Cats are sensitive to cold and falling body temperature because of small body size, differences in subcutaneous fat, and activity level. Kittens and senior cats are especially vulnerable.
