Severe Cyanosis: Possible Immediate Oxygen or Circulatory Imbalance
Blue-purple mucous membranes or tongue usually reflect increased deoxygenated hemoglobin or inadequate local or systemic perfusion. It may be related to respiratory or cardiovascular dysfunction and is a potentially life-threatening sign.

What this symptom means clinically
Cyanosis is blue-purple discoloration of mucous membranes, mainly associated with reduced oxygen saturation or abnormal hemoglobin function. Physiologically, it can result from inadequate oxygenation, ventilation-perfusion mismatch, or right-to-left cardiac shunting, reflecting impaired oxygen transport by the respiratory or cardiovascular system.
🐱 In cats
Cats may show few obvious signs early in respiratory distress, and purple mucous membranes often indicate later progression. Clinical deterioration in cats can occur rapidly.
🐶 In dogs
Dogs may develop cyanosis with airway obstruction or cardiopulmonary disease. Some brachycephalic breeds are more prone to airway-related low oxygen signs because of anatomy.
